How to Create Pac-Man Figure in Artplotty Grid - Techronology

Overview

This quick tutorial shows you how to create pac-man figure in Artplotty Grid.

So, before we get busy with this lesson, we most stay we love Ms. Pac-Man. It is a great timeless game. We still play it from time-to-time using DosBox, on our personal computers. Go to JROK’s page to download it.

Angle rotation in Artplotty

In Artplotty, our angle rotation is opposite from what you may see in the unit circle in mathematics. Of course, it starts from 0 and returns to the same spot at 360. Also, it rotates clockwise (to the left).

The image below shows you a very basic angle rotation diagram for Artplotty. If you want an arc that goes from 0 to 90, then your start point will be 0 and your end point 360. Pretty straightforward, similar to the image below.

Keep in mind, your starting point does not have to be zero. You can start at any degree between 0 and 360. Just remember, rotation is clockwise.

Steps to create Pac-Man figure

So, we will create a Pac-Man figure that goes from left-to-right. In our case, we want the mouth to start at 45 and end at 315. Therefore, we figure 45 is in between 0 and 90. Also, 315 is in between 270 and 360. Thus, this will work for us.

Additionally, our radius will be 5.

Step 1 – Enter center point and radius

Using the circle dataset, enter 10 for both x and y. For the Radius, enter 5. Skip Start and End fields, which automatically populate.

As a result, you see a full circle in the middle of the canvas.

Step 2 – Enter start and end points

For Start enter 45, and for End enter 315. Nothing really happens. Except, you may see a darker curve over your circle. But, the full circle is still shown.

Step 3 – Redraw canvas

Almost finally, click Redraw from the main menu. Do you see the open arc now? It looks great!

Next, we will draw the mouth using the line dataset. Unfortunately, we did not put the closed arc option feature in our circle dataset. That is okay though.

Step 4 – Create the mouth

Let us draw two lines going from the center (10, 10) to each openings.

As you see from the above image, we had to approximate the end point (13.54, 6.44). Firstly, we used (13.5, 6.5), which kind of worked. However, we wanted to be more precise. So, play around with values and see how it goes.

Remember, each time you change a value, redraw the canvas. Tip: If you know you will need to redraw, then click Redraw before you go to the next input box.

Next, draw the bottom part of the mouth.

For us, the bottom part of the mouth goes from (10, 10) to (13.54, 13.54).

Finally, you have a Pac-Man image. You can now save it as a transparent 600×600 PNG image.

Success!

So, were you successful in creating the Pac-Man figure? If so, congratulations. Otherwise, give it another shot.

Extra tip

Create Pac-Man figure - Continuous line - Techronology

Do you see how we created two separate lines for the mouth? Well, now that you know the coordinates, you can simplify it as a continuous. So, use the coordinates below to create a continuous line. Remember to redraw.

  1. (13.54, 6.44)
  2. (10, 10)
  3. (13.54, 13.54)

Instead of five rows, now you have three. You really do not have to do this, especially if you are dealing with a huge design. Just wanted to show you something else you can do in Artplotty.
